Product Description
Antique Chart Java Sea titled ‘A NEW CHART OF THE JAVA SEA, WITHIN THE ISLES OF SUNDA; with ITS STRAITS, and THE ADJACENT SEAS’.
A stunning and very scarce chart of the Java Sea including part of Sumatra, the whole of Java, Bali, Lombok, the western end of Sumbawa and the southern coast Borneo in old colour published in the The East-India Pilot, or Oriental Navigator, on One Hundred and Eighteen Plates: Containing a Complete Collection of Charts and Plans, &c… by Laurie & Whittle (fl. 1794-1812) of London in 1794. The charts are based on the 1745 French Neptune Oriental by Jean Baptiste Nicolas Denis d’Apres de Mannevillette. The plate, numbered 34, includes rhumb lines, depths and shoals, the paths of previous explorations, a compass rose and an inset, The East Side of Isle Lubeck, with the Osterly Shoals“. The coast lines are further illustrated with eight topographical cross sections along the bottom border and a further three beneath the title cartouche. In line with other sea charts of the period, there is very little information on the inland geography of the islands away from the immediate coastal areas.
Condition: A strong impression with a deep plate mark on very thick paper which has some foxing and browning along the bottom and along the left and right margins; a few small vertical tears along the bottom margin repaired with archival tape.
