Batavia In’t Verschiet, c.1724

A beautiful and rare mid-18th century engraving in old colour of Batavia roads, the city of Batavia and the Bogor volcanoes of Panggrano, Salak and Gede by an anonymous artist and published in Francois Valentijn’s Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien in 1724-26. Valentijn was a missionary who worked at Amboina (Ambon) from 1684 to 1694 and from 1705 to 1713. He travelled extensively throughout the archipelago and his monumental history and description, Oud en Nieuw Oost-Indien remains as one of the most important sources of information on the East Indies.

Very good condition, measures 26.8 x 53 cm, (plate).
