South-east Asia by Jan Jansson 1638    INDIAE ORIENTALIS, NOVA DESCRIPTIO

The much sought after early to mid-17th century map of Indonesia and South-east Asia in modern hand colour by the famous Dutch cartographer Jan Jansson from the French edition of the atlas Geradi Mercatoris Atlas ou Representation Du Monde Universel Et Des Parties D’Icelui, Faicte En Tables Et Descriptions Tres Amples Tome scond, Editio Ultima Sumptibus & typis aenis Henrici Hondij, Amsterodami 1633. This 1633 edition still has the names of Gerard Mercator and Judocus Hondius the title whereas Jansson’s two-volume atlas of 1638 has the title “Nieuwen/Nova/Newer Atlas”, leaving out the name of Mercator. This edition therefore represents the transition between the old Mercator-Hondius series of atlases and the newer editions under the imprint of Jan Jansson who was in very keen competition with William Janszoon Bleau, the premier Dutch cartographer of the 17th century and Chief Hydrographer to the Dutch East India Company (Koeman, Vol. II, Me35, page 363).

French text on verso; very good condition apart from two small worm holes; one in the lower left-hand margin and the other in the lower right-hand margin, measures 388 x 503 mm.
