DESCRIPTION SVMATRAE. Benjamin Wright caelavit

A small 16th century map of Sumatra and the southern and central part of the Malay Peninsula by the English engraver Benjamin Wright who engraved new plates in 1599 for the miniature island maps of Java and Sumatra that were published in Linschoten’s Itinerario in 1598 and published them in the second edition of Cornelis Claesz’s Map Treasury in 1599. The map was originally derived from that of Barent Langenes’ account of Cornelis de Houtman’s expedition to the East Indies published at Middleburg in 1598 in the first edition of the Map Treasury. This particular map is from a Latin edition of the Map Treasury published between 1599 and 1611.
