First edition, a very valuable description of Java, extremely well documented and illustrated. Raffles, lieutenant-governor of Java during British rule from 1811 to 1816 and founder of Singapore, is acknowledged as a man of great influence on the history of Southeast Asia. More than only a history he gives a description of Java in all its aspects: geographical situation, native inhabitants, agriculture, manufactures, commerce, ceremonies, languages, religion.
London, printed for Black, Parbury, and Allen, booksellers to the Hon. East-India Company, and John Murray 1817, 1817. 2 volumes. 4to. [III]- XLVIII,479; [III]-VIII,288,[4],CCLXp, With 65 plates, including one folding, and 10 coloured aquatint costume plates, 9 engravings in the text, numerous tables including some folding, and a very large folding map (112 x 44 cm). Some scattered paper spotting, finely bound in nineteenth century calf; boards embossed with gilt rims and floral motifs. Spines fragile, worn, with six compartments raised bands and gold scrolls, gilt text in compartments two and five. Vol.1 cracked at top spine, green pastdowns somewhat mottled. First few leaves including title foxed and browned. Vol.2 spine cracked at base, boards scuffed at extremities. Offsetting of Ganesha plate to title page. Owner’s bookplate on pastedowns both volumes.
