Description: Antique print, untitled. This plate shows a Tring Dayak woman of Borneo, Indonesia. Carl Bock made his expedition to east- and south Borneo in order of Governor-General Van Lansberghe. Bock's task was to write an account of the various Dayak tribes living in the interior of the area. Little was known about these 'savages' -- who firmly rejected Dutch authority -- apart from the fact that they were head-hunters, some even cannibals. Carl Bock passed through areas never before penetrated by Europeans.
