JAVA./GEZICHT OP HET LAND KEDONG BADAK EN /DEN GROOTEN WEG NAAR BUITENZORG./17/ Amsterdam. FRANS BUFFA & ZONEN.
A very fine mid-19th century Dutch chromolithograph of the volcanoes, hills and countryside around Buitenzorg, modern-day Bogor by Johan Grieve Jr., after paintings and drawings by Abraham Salm, a Surabaja merchant and tobacco planter of Malang, who spent twenty-one years of his life in Indonesia. The print, No. 17 of twenty-four, was published in a work entitled Java. Naar Schilderijen en Teekeningen van A. Salm, Lid Der Koninkluke Akademie van Beelende Kunsten in Amsterdam in 1872 (although Part 1 consisting of four plates was published in 1865) by Frans Buffa & Zonen. The full work containing 24 plates work consists of 6 parts and is considered to be superior in terms of lithographic quality, artistic merit and scientific accuracy to the firm’s other two sumptuous plate works on Indonesia, after J.J. van Braam’s Vues de Java (Amsterdam, 1842) and C.W.M. van de Velde’s Gezigten uit Neêrlands Indië (Amsterdam, 1843-45).
