A beautiful mid-17th century sea chart of Borneo Island in original outline colour by the famous Dutch cartographer Jan Jansson also known as Johannes Janssonius (1588-1664) and originally published in his five-volume sea atlas Atlantis Majoris Quinta Pars Orbem Maritimum in 1657. One of three folio-sized maps of the three largest Indonesian islands in the atlas, the others being Sumatra and Java. This particular map bears the imprint of Pieter (Petrus) Schenk (1661-1711) and Gerard Valk (1652-1726) who began working together as engravers, publishers and map sellers around 1680. They acquired the copper plates of Johannes Janssonius’ (Jan Jansson) Atlas Novus in 1694, removed Jansson’s name from the map, added their own and published new editions of the atlas under the name Atlas Contractus from 1696 until 1719.
