Interesting mid-18th century engraving of the Volcano Gunung Api and Banda Neira island with the old VOC fortifications. A numeric description below the print indicate the places. Dutch anchored ships in the foreground.
Banda Neira was once the global center of the trade in nutmeg and mace, as the Bandas Islands were the only source of these valuable spices until the mid-19th century. The modern town was established by members of the Dutch East India Company as the capital of the Governorate of the Banda Islands. The Dutch forced out or exterminated most of the native Bandanese in order to exploit this lucrative resource.
Engraved by Jakob van der Schley aka Jakob van Schley (26 July 1715 Amsterdam – 12 February 1779 Amsterdam) was a Dutch draughtsman and engraver.
Published in Antonine de Prevost d’ Exile’s Histoire generale des voyages, by Jacques Nicolas Bellin (1703 – 21 March 1772)
Bellin was born in Paris. He was hydrographer of France’s hydrographic office, member of the Académie de Marine and of the Royal Society of London. Over a 50 year career, he produced a large number of maps of particular interest to the Ministère de la Marine.
