Antique print of a Javanese Man and Woman titled ‘A Javanese Man and Woman’. This print depicts a man and woman of Java, with the intention of presenting their indigenous costumes. The image was appropriated from an engraving first published by Johan Nieuhof. In this depiction, the Javanese figures, especially the lady, looks more Westernised. Source unknown, to be determined.
Johan Nieuhof (1618-1672) was a Dutch traveller who wrote about his journeys to Brazil, China, India and the East-Indies.
