Antique print of the attack of Palembang titled ‘La Ville de/PALIMBANG/dans/l’Île de Sumatra’.

A very finely engraved early 18th century print in old colour showing two views of the Dutch attacking and burning Palimbang (Palembang) town on the east coast of Sumatra in 16…… by the prolific Dutch cartographer Pieter Vander Aa of Leiden published in his atlas La Galerie Agreabale Du Monde in 1729 in Leiden. The upper view shows the approach of the Dutch fleet up the Musi River to Palembang under fire from the Sultan of Palembang’s forts on the shore (Matpuriand and Bamagangian) and on an island in the river (Fort Cambare), and engaging with lthe Sultan’s warships.. The lower print shows a closer view from the river of Palembang ablaze centred on the Palais du Roy or King’s Palace.
