Description

Description: Antique print, untitled. This plate shows a the war dance of a Tring Dayak warrior of Borneo, Indonesia. Carl Bock made his expedition to east- and south Borneo in order of Governor-General Van Lansberghe. Bock’s task was to write an account of the various Dayak tribes living in the interior of the area. Little was known about these ‘savages’ — who firmly rejected Dutch authority — apart from the fact that they were head-hunters, some even cannibals. Carl Bock passed through areas never before penetrated by Europeans.

From the first Dutch edition of ‘Reis in Oost- en Zuid Borneo van Koetei naar Banjermassin’ by Carl Bock, published 1881..

Artists and Engravers: Made by ‘C. F. Kell’ after ‘Carl Bock’. Carl Alfred Bock (1849 – 1932) was a Norwegian government official, author, naturalist and explorer.
