A very fine and relatively rare late 17th century map black and white Italian map of the Pacific Ocean by Vincenzo Coronelli (1650-1718), Minorite friar at San Nicolo della lattuga, Venice, map and globe maker, Doctor of Theology, founder of the Academia Cosmografica degli Argonauti and from 1685, Cosmographer to the Republic of Venice. The map covers the the Pacific Ocean with the Americas from ‘Isola di California’ to Tierra del Fuego, and Japan to ‘Nuova Gvinea, Nuova Hollanda’, ‘Terra d’Antonio Diemens’ and ‘Nuova Zelanda’. Le Maire’s 1615-1617 voyage is shown and a large mass in the place of Hokkaido is marked ‘Terra de lesso, o leco, Yedco, Esso, et Sesso’ discovered by the Dutch in 1643. Text in Italian next to an asterisk off the New Zealand coast says: “This exact place marked by an asterisk is antepodian to the City of Venice, home of the author of this work.” The map, engraved for Coronelli’s Atlante Veneto published in Venice between 1690 and 1696 , contains a splendid cartouche with a dedication to, “the most illustrious and excellent Sir Knight Giulio Giustinian Sauio Grande.” Excellent condition; measures 447 x 598 mm.
