Description
“Niuwe Kaart / van de Sundasche Eilanden / als / Borneo, Sumatra / en Groot Iava &c. Uitgegeven te Amsterdam / door Isaak Tirion”
An attractive and relatively rare Dutch map of the Sunda Islands, western Indonesia in original colour published by Isaak Tirion (1705-1765) in the second Dutch edition of Nieuwe en beknopte hand-atlas in Amsterdam in 1744, with six further editions up to 1784. The atlas contained 114 maps of the countries of the world and a copy of the atlas was auctioned recently at Christie’s for USD 16,000. It is doubtful if Tirion was the author or editor of the maps he published; he was more of a bookseller and publisher than a geographer or a cartographer, but he must have had access to a very competent cartographer as his maps excel in style and accuracy
